...the one lens that can do it all, very well? It's the Nikon 50mm f/1.4. I've had it for about 6 years now, had a phase where I forgot about it because it's so 'normal', but then picked it up more regularly again after being tired of carrying around the 24-70mm f/2.8 (which I thought was the perfect lens) and really started appreciating all of its qualities. It captures incredible light, delicious bokeh, and is just wide enough to capture the environment while you focus on the subject. The 85mm f/1.4 is spectacular too but more specifically geared towards getting gorgeous portraits - it's also generally too close so you'd never be able to capture something spontaneously since you need to create that space first. The 50mm is more versatile, smaller, lighter, and cheaper. Less intimidating for everyone involved. If I had to pick just one, this one would absolutely be it.
